I have proposed a few ideas to reuse Christmas wrapping paper.

(1) Used wrapping paper makes a great cover when repackaging ornaments for your Christmas tree. It keeps them protected and ready for the next holiday season.

(2) Shred wrapping paper and use in the base of gift bags/baskets/boxes or in place of packing material when sending a package.

(3) Use as bookmarks or text book covers

(4) Use a scratch paper

(5) Use as gift tags

(6) Use as matting for photographsdr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-65653261310639026702011-11-24T09:54:00.001-08:002011-11-24T09:56:45.200-08:00Sustainability During ThanksgivingThanksgiving is one of the most decked out holidays with extravagant food and such. This Thanksgiving, Americans can implement some of these sustainable ideas.

(1) Buy your dinner food from local sources
(2) Eat and dont waste
(3) Dispose of you waste as leftovers or turn food into composting facilities
(4) Give your leftovers to the homeless shelters if there is a lot left
(5) Recycle any that you can, and use reusable dishesdr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-41678823841733362702011-11-23T20:40:00.001-08:002011-11-23T20:43:08.813-08:00General Mills a Sustainable BusinessKnoxville businesses should take advise from General Mills. General Mills created more revanue from recycling its cheerio waste than it spent on disposing of it.

In the past two years, General Mills has turned its solid waste into profits. Cheerios by-product, oat hulls, have been disposed for years, but now the company is recycling 86% of its total waste, including the oat hulls, and burning it as fuel. Now customers compete to buy the stuff to burn fuel. Now General Mills is earning more from that than it spent on disposal.
This is caused because climate change is raising the cost and lowing the quality of food. The warming has reduced corn and wheat production by over 3% raising the price to 20% higher. The future is not looking too promising either. Droughts are also affecting pecans, which means no holiday favorite such as pecan pie. Therefore if you find this year's Thanksgiving dinner to be tasty and affordable, that is something truly to be thankful for.dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-40024100864758958602011-11-17T21:03:00.001-08:002011-11-17T21:05:30.720-08:00Spongebob and Climate Change

This is a hilarious kid friendly video about the effects of climate change. Mr. Krabs is pumping CO2 into the atmosphere in order to make money. This is an analogy to the oil companies and car industries that pump the CO2 into the atmosphere in order to make money. As soon as Mr. Krabs and Spongebob think they will be able to make money on the summer fun, the whole town burns up and has to migrate to a cooler climate, thus affecting the money industry. This is a great analogy to the real world situation of climate change!dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-69740956004197749462011-11-17T20:56:00.001-08:002011-11-17T20:58:32.735-08:00Polar Bears Discussing Climate Change

Polar bears are discussing what might be causing climate change. They come to the conclusion that humans surely are not causing climate change to harm them. Therefore, the skeptics view this way. Why would humans want to cause this? Humans dont but we are the reason based on a vast amount of scientific data.dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-39558042310718029602011-11-06T19:32:00.000-08:002011-11-06T19:32:36.278-08:00Changing "The Strip"The city of Knoxville is teaming up to "revamp" the highly renowned strip of restaurants running through and on the outskirts of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This master plan mainly focuses on making "The Strip" more pedestrian friendly. Many buildings will undergo restorations, with other renovations include a 14-foot travel lane allowing both vehicular and bicycle movement, higher density mixed-use development, potential for designated transit stops, wider sidewalks, proposed three-lane cross-section with left-turn lane, and buildings built near the street with parking located in the rear. Knoxville will also remove utility poles and place them underground. This renovation will help beautify the Knoxville community and attract more students to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-19671887187985088502011-10-30T22:57:00.000-07:002011-10-30T22:57:23.016-07:00Bottle Water.......YUCK

Bottled water has been an increasing problem throughout the globe. The point of this video proves that a glass of bottled water is lower quality, loses tastes taste and costs thousands of times more. Who would demand a less quality and more expensive product? Also a bottle of water contributes to the GHG effect by bottling and transportation. The containers are not even biodegradable! Therefore, tap water is even better quality, less expensive and millions of times better for the environment!dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-37429982196721056022011-10-28T20:11:00.000-07:002011-10-28T20:11:26.092-07:00Earth is Extraordinary

A short video, from students in western Europe, depicts how an extraterrestrial being comes to Earth to learn our ways. He then notices over time how humans have a very unique and brilliant planet that gives so much, but little do we as humans give back to it. The extraterrestrial stays on Earth in order to save it from human destruction and because he loves how unique this planet is and says "there is only one planet like this one"!dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-56537069369097728022011-10-24T07:56:00.000-07:002011-10-24T07:56:18.783-07:00A Dynamically Green Building

Not only was this an achievement, Knoxville also received the fifth-largest award! Knoxville's grant was larger than New York, Houston, Chicago, and Boston. This grant will be demonstrated over three years for a goal to set up one "demonstration community" in each of the five counties surrounding Knoxville, to showcase sustainable living addressing East Tennessee's needs. This grant will also be allotted for aspects of the University of Tennessee and ORNL.dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-40992331025295420542011-10-07T20:44:00.000-07:002011-10-07T20:44:42.089-07:00John Nolt TalkJohn Nolt, a distinguished professor of environmental philosophy in the UTK philosophy department gave a speech on October 6, 2011 on the ethics of climate change. Dr. Nolt began his speech stating his reasons to support climate change:
1.) the need for emissions reduction is urgent
2.) harm varies directly and continuously with total emissions
3.) individual emissions cause non-negligible harm
4.) harm contributes to unjust, domination of posterity by the affluent
5.) stop using unnecessary green house gas emitting devices
Dr. Nolt stated that billions off innocent people will die from the effects of climate change and everyone in the room has seen the effects of climate change one way or another. He also stated that its not the rate of GHG emissions, it the quantity that is being released and needs to be reduced. We must stop unjust domination of GHG emissions, because it is the affluent who is releasing the larger amounts of GHG's and the poor who are suffering the effects, therefore we must stop using unnecessary GHG emitting devices and stop it now!dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-34324495980562508482011-10-07T20:36:00.000-07:002011-10-07T20:36:02.276-07:00Net Zero Energy Home in KnoxvilleKnoxville now has a net zero energy home in the area. This 2,400 square foot house was built in 1973 and just recently went under $100,000 renovations. 1/3 of the house price was set for solar photovoltaics and hot water, 1/3 for energy changes such as a metal roof and new appliances, and 1/3 for other changes in house make over. In the first year of full-time occupancy by one person the house generated 1,500 kwh more power than it used and as of July 2008 when three members lived in the house, the house still produced more energy than it used. Therefore the house is even better than net zero! The possibilities are endless, just get the rest of Knoxville on board!dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-24910459099383417902011-10-01T21:20:00.000-07:002011-10-01T21:20:14.355-07:00Knoxville Air QualityKnoxville is known to be one of the worst cities with asthma. The reason behind this deals with the air quality. Knoxville has terrible air quality due to the interstate running directly through the county bringing major polluting traffic. Not only does the interstate play a role in the air quality but the surrounding area contributes to the quality. Knoxville is surrounded by rural country land which brings in many people and their cars (because Knoxville does not have a major public transit) to find more metropolitan amenities. These reasons contribute to the air quality being as bad as it is, and the sustainability board of Knoxville recommends a few tips: drive less, plan errands, drive more fuel efficiently, purchase renewable energy credits, and dont burn toxic materials. With this being said, Knoxville can reduce their air quality problems and decrease its asthma issues.dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-50905956569492596232011-09-30T19:05:00.000-07:002011-09-30T19:05:02.985-07:00Sustainable Key-Card SystemThe Holiday Inn in downtown Knoxville, is the first hotel to implement the energy saving key card system. The system will be implemented in every room of the hotel and will manage the lights, heating, and air conditioning as guests enter and leave their rooms. The key-card system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 1.4 million pounds per year and result in energy saving of more than 1 million kilowatt hours. The projected savings are around $88,000 a year for the system.

Therefore, if all buildings with access key entries implemented these, their business would be able to attain a higher profit, help the environment and begin to manage other sustainable features throughout the buildings.
dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-19686818382675792752011-09-23T18:51:00.000-07:002011-09-23T18:51:19.198-07:00Make Orange Green September 22, 2011The University of Tennessee, Knoxville held an even on September 22, 2011 about how the university and the surrounding area can make the environment more sustainable. The event consisted of many on and off campus organizations presenting their contributions and efforts toward global sustainability. Nissan, Mitsubishi and Chevrolet brought their fuel efficient vehicles to showcase. The Nissan car was totally fuel independent and ran solely on electricity. The car could go 100 miles before a quick charge was needed. In Knoxville their are only a few locations with the charging stations: the Hilton Downtown and places in the Ceder Bluff Area. By the end of this year, Tennessee hopes to have enough charging stations for these cars to go from Chattanooga to Knoxville, Chattanooga to Nashville and Knoxville to Nashville. The price of this car is $35000 with a $7500 rebate + another $2500 rebate. Therefore the price will be as low as $25000. Not only were there cars there, they had a booth on safe bicycling and petitions to the national government about safe bicycling. Over all, the event was successful and a few people convinced me enough to wear the "Make Orange Green" wrist bracelet!dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-61230210493367666822011-09-21T15:25:00.000-07:002011-09-21T15:25:40.653-07:00Cheap Cars = ScaryThe Tato Nano car was introduced just a few years ago and only costs a whopping, $2500! This car has been primarily implemented in India, the worlds largest growing population. The company said this car is revolutionary while U.S. chief U.N. climate scientist Rajendra Pachauri said he was having nightmares about the car. Dr. Pachauri is completely accurate when he said he was having nightmares. Think about it? The worlds largest growing population with some of the poorest citizens having access to cheap cars, does this seem right? No, the green house gases emitted from these cars and the oil needed for upkeep will drastically increase the worlds climatic temperatures.

If these Nano car's become a huge popularity and come to the United States and around the globe, a climate catastrophe is inevitable.dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-90763178670847079712011-09-16T07:37:00.000-07:002011-09-16T07:37:31.616-07:00Make Orange GreenThe University of Tennessee, Knoxville is committed to providing an environmentally sustainable campus in the future. The facilities department, the Make Orange Green department, the Committee on Campus Environment and the office of the Chancellor worked to develop a climate action plan in 2009. This plan was formulated due to approximately 243,728 metric tons of carbon dioxide emitted on campus each and every year. This number has actually decreased over the last four consecutive years and by 2061, the university plans to eliminate all GHG emissions.

The largest amount of GHG emissions are caused by the large power supply that the university must purchase each year. The university hopes to equal out the GHG emissions instead of creating more due to building inefficient buildings and expanding the campus. Therefore, in the universities future, building and expanding campus will consist of more efficient buildings and power supplies, while cutting costs and usage down.dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-64308077516833746672011-09-11T08:05:00.000-07:002011-09-11T08:05:46.785-07:00Tennessee Senator "On the Fence"Tennessee senator Lamar Alexander has been an influential leader in the state of Tennessee. He was the governor, then the president of the University of Tennessee and now a senator representing the state. Many believed that Sen. Alexander would be an influential leader in climate sustainability by quoting "Greenhouse gas is a problem. We... should, working with other countries, use our science and technology to deal with it and, in the process, see if it can lead us toward that brilliant intersection of clean energy and clean air that will one day give us a steady supply of energy and clean air that we can breath."

Therefore, many thought Sen. Alexander would be a "yes" vote on climate legislation, but then voted in October 2003 against the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act and then against Sen. John Kerry's bill in 2005 for U.S. recognition of climate change through cost-effective measures. His most recent quote on climate change was that "There's the unfinished job of cleaning the air and for many the global warming of out planet has become an urgent concern".

For climate initiatives to begin and be initiated at full power, senators and elected officials must stand firmly in the issues they want fixed. If senators, like Sen. Alexander, continue to be "On the Fence", then how can the United States initiate fixing global warming?dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-83077056012460581112011-09-11T07:39:00.000-07:002011-09-11T07:39:26.953-07:00Energy ConservationTo build upon the last post, Knoxville is not only implementing water conservation but energy conservation as well. Energy conservation is the act of reducing electricity through either less time using it or using more efficient means. But why is energy conservation important? Because many methods of energy production pollute, reducing consumption will help prevent pollution and will save hundreds of dollars for you per year. Therefore, demanding less energy will not only help the environment it will benefit you as well.

Knoxville was recently awarded $200,000 dollars from the Department of Energy to implement green initiatives of solar power. Not only that, TVA matched this with a $100,000 initiative. Knoxville has used this to build a LEED certified, solar powered new transit bus station, public workshops on solar power and solar installation workshops. With the initiative the city of Knoxville is taking, the citizens can help by turning of lights, switching to CFL's, adjusting thermostats, installing insulation in buildings and much much more! Once this is complete, Knoxville is one step closer to a greener environment!dr.sullyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08371203533847874904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1448421861230019506.post-4343403820029730582011-09-07T21:46:00.000-07:002011-09-07T21:46:46.010-07:00Water Quality and ConservationKnoxville implemented a Citizens Guide to Sustainability in 2010 to heighten awareness in the community regarding sustainability in and around the Knoxville area. One topic mentioned in the article dives into the topic of water conservation, mentioning that water is one of our most precious resources and why we must conserve it. Why though? As more pollutants enter our rivers and streams, damage occurs in fragile ecosystems, flooding increases and it becomes more expensive to clean our drinking water. Therefore we must conserve this limited resource and spend our money wisely on other prevention methods and crisis that may occur.

How Can You Help?
Knoxville Office of Energy and Sustainability mentions a few tasks to preserve water: adjusting sprinklers to only water the lawn, shorten your shower a few minutes, avoid synthetic fertilizers, wash cars in car washes to reduce soap run-off and avoid pre-dish washing. Just these simple tasks can reduce hundreds of gallons of water alone and one person initiating can change the whole community.
